Soy Wax vs. Paraffin Wax: What's the difference?

Soy Wax vs Paraffin: What's the difference?

As chandlers (No, not the guy from Friends. Look it up.), the question we get asked most frequently is "what is the difference between soy and paraffin wax?"

It's a great question. And due to the mystery of it all many people think using soy wax is a hipster trick to up-sell the same thing you can find at Wal-Mart for twice the price. It's not. Selling soy candles is about providing a higher quality, safer, more renewable product than the paraffin competition.

The big difference

Let's cut to the chase. The major difference between soy and paraffin wax begins with their origins. Paraffin wax is a byproduct of crude oil refinement, while soy wax is made by extracting and hydrogenating the oils of green, renewable soy bean crops.

Although paraffin wax has a lower price point and easier supply chain access, it also comes with a whole host of negative externalities that we at Burn choose not to support. By producing our candles using the highest quality soy wax in the industry we choose to support our environment, support local soy farmers and encourage our environment to flourish rather than deplete it of resources.

Our wax variety. Greener and Safer

Let's step down from the environmental soap box for a minute and take a look at some other great reasons our soy wax variety is something you can be proud to use in your home:

It's washable

Have kids? No worries! Burn's advanced 100% soy wax variety is easily removed with basic soap and water, so you never have to worry about ruining clothing, furniture, flooring or other items. A simple rinse through the sink or washer and you're as good as new.

You're supporting a renewable US made resource

100% of the soy beans sourced in our wax variety come from established farms inside the continental United States, and since soy is continually producible it's a resource that can be replaced at the same rate it's consumed if not greater. That means more soy wax for our candles and no damage to our ecosystem!

We have a cooler burn pool

By melting at a lower temperature our wax provides a safer alternative to other soy and paraffin varieties with higher melting points. With a lower melting point we are able to give you the same quality of scent throw without burning a whole in your living room.
