How Can A Little Lavender Change Your Whole Day?

Some love lavender and some don’t. My grandmother comes to mind when I smell a particular scent of lavender, which, as I talk with more people seems to be a common memory. Lavender is actually one of the most commonly used essential oils in the world today. It has been around the world for centuries, so if you haven’t tried it out yet, here are seven reasons why you should run out and try some today:

  1. It can relieve anxiety and emotional stress.

Lavender just smells relaxing, “Lavender essential oil is an effective substitute for anxiety medications. Researchers investigated the use of lavender for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. An oral lavender oil capsule preparation taken over six weeks was shown to effectively relieve generalized anxiety comparable to lorazepam, a powerful anti-anxiety drug.”

  2. It can be used to alleviate headaches

There are millions of people around the world who struggle with both tension headaches and migraine heartaches who are searching for a natural alternative to drugs. According to new medical research, lavender oil may just be that natural cure they are looking for. According to a study published in the European Journal of Neurology people struggling with migraine headaches saw a significant reduction in pain when they inhaled lavender oil for 15 minutes. Probably the most effective natural treatment for headaches is combing lavender oil with peppermint oil and rubbing these oils on the back of the neck, the temples on the lateral side of the forehead along with inhaling it. Typically 2 drops of each oil in the palm of your hand then rubbed into the areas works perfectly.

  3. It helps you get better shut-eye

A study on college students found that using lavender oil improved the overall quality of sleep by 60%. This included length of sleep, time it took to fall asleep, restfulness and reduced symptoms of insomnia. If you are trying to improve your quality of sleep, diffusing lavender before or during sleep can help. Also, you can rub it directly on your neck, chest and temples which is also effective.

  4. Lavender heals burns and wounds

Widely known for its antimicrobial properties, lavender has a rich history of being used to prevent various infections and combat bacterial/fungal disorders. In fact, almost 100 studies have been conducted establishing this truth.

Also, it has been found that lavender oil speeds the healing of burns, cuts, scrapes and wounds and a big part of this is because of it’s anti-microbial properties.

  5. It slows aging with antioxidants

Researchers from China have recently discovered that lavender essential oil helps your body produce three of your body's most powerful antioxidants, glutathione, catalase, and SOD within 22 hours of using lavender essential oil!

  6. It can clear up that stuffy nose (Our Favorite)!

When you're feeling blue or a little ill, drop 2 tbsp fresh lavender flowers (chopped) to 8 cups of water and steep make sure to strain out flowers and drink it all up!  Also when your nose just won't seem to work properly, add 5 drops to a small bowl of hot water and inhale. It works like a charm and you won't have to use any harsh chemicals!

“The scent of lavender increases alpha waves in the area of the brain responsible for relaxation,” explains Alan Hirsch, M.D.
